Barbara A. Ward, MD

Dr. Barbara Ward is a surgical oncologist specializing in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of breast cancer. She is currently the medical director of the Breast Center at Greenwich Hospital. Dr. Ward came to Greenwich Hospital ten years ago to help to establish the Breast Center after serving as the medical director of the Yale Breast Center. She has served on the Board of Directors for the New England Division of the American Cancer Society and the Medical Advisory Board of the Breast Cancer Alliance. Dr. Ward has received many awards including the Star of Hope Award from the American Cancer Society, the President’s Award from Greenwich Hospital, the Partner in Care Award from the nurses at Greenwich Hospital, Teacher of the Year Award from the Yale surgical housestaff and New York Magazine’s Top Doctor recognition from 2000 through 2011. She is a member of several societies, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Eastern Surgical Society, the New England Surgical Society, and she is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Ward is a native Pennsylvanian and graduated from the University of Notre Dame prior to obtaining her M.D. degree at Temple University in 1983. She trained in surgery at Yale from 1983-2000. During those years she also did her surgical oncology fellowship and research in the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute. Following her chief residency, Dr. Ward stayed on the surgical faculty at Yale for the next ten years. She was first to introduce the sentinel node biopsy technique to Connecticut and continues to support the advancement of novel surgical approaches for breast cancer patients. Dr. Ward lives in Greenwich with her husband and two daughters.
