When it’s early April and you are suffering from the “black wool and boots” blues, you need a touch of the Breast Cancer Alliance Junior Committee’s annual fashion show. The exciting and colorful show was just the thing to take the admiring audience of Moms, Dads, friends and supporters directly into spring.
The committee, advised by Alliance board members Ellen Keats and Suzanne Sennatt, got things rolling with a silent auction of sporty and elegant gifts and prizes donated by area merchants and Alliance supporters. That kept guests busy as the 25 or so teenage models assembled and prepared to strut down the grand staircase at Richards.

One at a time, the boys and girls showed off a stylish collection of day and evening wear perfect for around the town or out on the town. Avril Graham, Fashion & Beauty Editor of Harper’s Bazaar, was once again the event’s emcee and kept the audience entertained with her commentary on the coming season’s fashion trends as she introduced each model.
We learned that bright citrus colors are in vogue, as is the “safari” look. Graham admonished the viewers to avoid matching shoes and bags to a dress – “That’s a no-no! Look for something different to make the look come alive,” she said. We might know that bright green and gladiator flats are in, but here’s a tip: resist the temptation for a strappy sandal, go for the chunky shoe instead for an edgier look. And finally, embellishments, like glitter straps or a feather shrug are a major look for the coming months.
In addition to the fun, the Junior chairs reminded us of their commitment to the breast cancer cause. The Committee’s activities have raised over $25,000 for the Alliance so far this year. Co-chair Kim O’Neill spoke of the rewards of visiting the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, where she saw firsthand the impact the Junior Committee’s funding has on the community through comprehensive breast cancer outreach and case managerial services. She and her co-chair Taylor Bell thanked all the teens and adults who had helped with this event and the February “Pink and White” dance, including Andrew Mitchell and Kyle Silver, director of the Arch Street Teen Center. They introduced next year’s co-chairs, Brittany Beattie, Meggy Hearn and Gabby Morgan, to end an upbeat and inspiring year at the helm of this busy and fulfilling group.
