Breast Cancer Alliance Awards 18 Grants for 2011
The Breast Cancer Alliance will award five research grants, two breast surgery fellowships and eleven education/outreach grants for 2011. This year's research grants will fund innovative projects at leading cancer research institutions in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The Alliance will also fund education initiatives, community outreach programs and free screening mammography programs that reach underserved and uninsured women in Fairfield, New Haven, Hartford and Westchester Counties.
Debbie Black, President of the Breast Cancer Alliance, said, “We are grateful that we can continue to fund critical research and outreach programs, even in challenging times. Now more than ever, we need to continue pushing forward on cutting edge research and providing needed breast cancer services in our communities.”
“We are excited to fund explorations into breast cancer diagnosis, metastasis and reconstruction, all areas in which great strides are being made to improve survival and quality of life. We are pleased to award grants to these researchers and programs," added Kim Fulton, Kathy Hanson, and Carla Kidd, Grants Committee chairs.
For the ninth consecutive year, longtime Alliance supporters Joanne and Michael Masin have funded a Young Investigator. Their grant will support the research of Elizabeth Comen, MD, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The 2011 grants include the sixth Debbie Taylor Breast Surgery Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center/St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Continuum Cancer Centers of New York. This year also marks a fifth grant to the Yale-New Haven Breast Center, in honor of Norma Lies Mitchell.
