Junior Committee

Each fall, the Alliance Junior Committee gets fresh leadership and begins anew its task of involving high school students in the fight against breast cancer. Not only does the Committee spread awareness of the disease, but its efforts provide substantial funding to the breast health outreach program at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT.

This year’s committee co-chairs, Brittany Beattie, Meggy Hearn, and Gabby Morgan from Greenwich High School and Karin Carnegie from Greenwich Academy, are already hard at work organizing activities. The girls, along with Board member and advisor Suzanne Sennatt, visited the Hospital of St. Raphael in November to see firsthand what their dollars accomplish. The Junior Committee also lent its behind-the-scenes support to the Annual Benefit Luncheon and Fashion Show on October 30, helped out at the Holiday Boutique and supported the Greenwich Hospital Greenwich Thinks Pink campaign in the fall.

Plans for next spring include the annual Pink and White Dance to be held at the Arch Street Teen Center on February 21, and the Junior Fashion Show coming up next April 19 at Richards of Greenwich. The Committee will also assist with and march in the Hands Across the Avenue walk.

Why do they take time out from their busy lives as students to become involved? Here’s what the girls have to say about that.

Brittany Beattie, Senior, Greenwich High School
I become a member of the Junior Breast Cancer Alliance my freshman year at Greenwich High School. As a freshman I was astonished by the effort a group of young boys and girls put in to help fight for great cause, and the results that came from it. Whether it be planning our big annual Pink & White Dance at Arch Street, or modeling at our Spring Fashion show, I am so honored to be a co-chair of a club that is helping in the fight against Breast Cancer. It is something that affects so many women around the world, which is why I pursued becoming involved in the club.

Karin Carnegie, Senior, Greenwich Academy
I decided to become involved in the Breast Cancer Alliance for several reasons. My mother and aunt both survived breast cancer, and I wanted to do something to help other women with a similar experience. The Breast Cancer Alliance provides excellent opportunities for girls my age. My club has been able to volunteer at the Breast Cancer Alliance, help organize the Pink and White Dance, and model in the Junior BCA fashion show. I'm so excited to pass on these opportunities to younger girls at GA so that Greenwich Academy can continue its involvement in the Junior Breast Cancer Alliance.

Meggy Hearn, Senior, Greenwich High School
I was originally introduced to the organization in middle school because a few of my sister’s best friends founded the Junior Committee and I was involved and exposed to all of the awesome projects they were doing at the time. When I came to the high school, I certainly wanted to join the club and became more and more passionate about its projects. To me, it is extremely gratifying to see the influence our group has on the community. Not only do we raise tens of thousands of dollars for direct aid, but I think the awareness we spread is extremely important. I would be confident in assuming that the work we have done in reminding people to get their mammograms and conduct self-examinations will, if it hasn’t already, save a life with early detection. I honestly believe that what we, in conjunction with the Breast Cancer Alliance, make a difference. This year, I hope we have as much, and hopefully even more success with our annual dance and fashion show and look forward to helping out the BCA with all of their great projects.

Gabby Morgan, Senior, Greenwich High School
I originally became interested with the Junior Breast Cancer Alliance in my freshman year when I started to hear about all of the amazing events they put on to raise money, such as The Pink and White dance and the fashion show. Although I was only a freshman, the club was well known and popular among my friends. Therefore, I met the group for their first meeting of the year and was immediately amazed by how much they seemed to be able to do. Throughout the next four years, I have witnessed the club grow in size and in power, raising huge amounts of money through our fundraisers. Even on top of all of our stressful academic, athletic and social schedules, the Breast Cancer Alliance continues to represent a committed and involved community service club that is dedicated to supporting such a pressing cause.
